I was raised in the liberal suburbs of a big city and changed sides because the right had better arguments, so it took me a lot longer than it should have to wrap my head around how intense and intractable this dynamic is. There is a not inconsequential demographic of people who'd rather bleed out on the pavement than notice the race of the guy who did it, because that might mean admitting that Dad back in flyover country was right about something.
