It could be well argued that falling asleep next to your woman is the MOST masculine thing you can do. You affirm you are so secure in your mastery of her, so confident in the trust you have cultivated, that you can become absolutely insensate next to her without fearing you'll be missing your willy in the morning. Mastery beyond consciousness, confidence beyond control. Fretting about how you might give the "ick" means you don't trust yourself to have done the mastering properly in your waking life, especially because there are a lot of women who find their man sleeping to be incredibly endearing.

But more fundamentally, sleep mechanistically is required for neural network upkeep. You're not "shutting off" - in fact it's defragmenting, physically cleaning out debris from your CNS, and getting the pesky neocortex out of the way of deeper processing needs. The conscious part is like the little man with a stick on top of an elephant, whipping and screaming away all day long as the great lumbering beast beneath relents to its annoying commands and plows through the jungle. The beast needs to stretch its legs unfettered sometimes lest it goes berserk in ways the driver can't foresee or control. The needs and capabilities of the rider differ from that of the beast, and ensuring both are driving towards the desired goal is a fundamentally masculine practice.
