Great interview. Re the primary process in 1960, my understanding is that it was still mostly controlled by party bosses. There were some (usually non-binding) democratic primaries in a handful of states that gauged popular sentiment, but state conventions were still generally used in lieu of democratic primaries.

Of course any half-breed will be uncomfortable with ethnic or racial ‘essentialism,’ and will naturally attempt to water it down within any social or political milieu they are part of.
