The Idea-Forge
Some things are deeper than epistemics
Before you read this, I’d familiarize yourself with my hermeneutics of status realism, discursive game theory, seven-layer model of minds, and analysis of normie psychology
Reason, it’s said, is a slave of the passions.
Everyone has heard the line, and everyone serious understands that it’s true.
Yet still we share oxygen with those who speak of intellectual life like one’s amygdala clocks out for a mental health day whenever someone constructs a Serious Argument. They imagine the august Thinker encountering a Question, and then examining the available Evidence, and then reaching some sagely Conclusion through a disinterested volitional-proposition-layer that churns through syllogism and counterfactual wholly unmoved by loves, lusts, loyalties, humiliations, resentments, fears, and ambitions.
My own system, of course, does not quite work that way.
Precisely every heuristic I’ve ever extended serious thought has originated far down the stack within some primordial affective leverage-point: That hurt. I want to fuck her. How’d the fuck he get away with that? Why’s everybody treating me like I’m the crazy one? Why did that work for him and not me? I refuse to let that happen again.
None of these statements are propositional; most are barely even beliefs. What they do belong to is something entirely underneath epistemics I call the conative substrate: the layer of wanting, striving, attaching, preserving, avenging, escaping, and refusing that determines what the rational mind is compelled to investigate in the first place.
First Affect supplies valence: good, painful, beautiful, disgusting, humiliating.
Think first-order somatic response, mapping to the Animal Self as described by All Behavior Is Performative
Then Conation gives direction: approach this, escape that, recover, destroy, prevent.
Still precognitive—but now it’s complex somatic assessments of health and threat and status (precognitive self), pricing in relational calculus and somatic intuition of tradeoff logic (relational self), as well as perpetual background calibration against ambient social mores (societal self).
Read ABIP if you want the mechanistic breakdown.
tl;dr — the conative substrate consists specifically in the processes through which motivation, desire, impulse, and normativity emerge in somatic precognition to orient agents instrumentally towards their most crucial material / genetic / status interests while likewise generating a Sincerity Narrative under which the aforementioned instrumental self-advancement is experienced internally as moral imperative, masculine honor, loyalty, civility, curiosity, and so on.
What matters for our purposes it that each and every one of us, long before he ever grapples with propositional abstraction or population-level aggregative heuristics, must account for his own individual journey through the shrouded amygdalic vicissitudes of the conative layer—and that includes wily old Wally B himself.
Don’t feel too bad for him, though—he’ll get his bag of tricks back soon enough
But first he needs to pony up a damn good reason for continuing to inhabit that vulgar and pathetic subjectivity of his own conation while still presuming to narrate others.
The question is actually crucial because there exists a very cheap and very tedious response to essentially my entire body of work that amounts to observing in triumph that certain events in my life influenced my later worldview.
Ah hah! You developed Epistemic Foreclosure cause people foreclosed you! You became interested in female coalition behavior after bad experiences with women! You theorize status because you personally have gained and lost status! Sounds like someone is
bitter!
Yeah.
You got me.
My conative substrate is neither more badass than yours, nor any more Christlike—which means that most of the time it’s pain determines which grants get funded.
Mercifully, this genre of dunk is far rarer than it used to be, harkening back mostly ir seems to an antiquarian WASP discursive ideal according to which propositions are imagined as detachable from the organism producing it, such that biography becomes contamination and emotion bias and a whiff of overt interest always something to bracket. The respectable speaker is expected to approach the podium having left his status, sex, temperament, humiliation, coalition, desire, and personal history behind in the car so disembodied Reason is free to inspect Reality without interference.
Of course, I’m merely describing a discursive convention here and not anything like the entire Anglophone philosophical tradition; Hume, after all, supplied the epigraph.
But the convention was real enough, and you can still hear it fairly resoundingly in old people, who instinctively want arguments adjudicated in a propositional vacuum, and treat the discovery of strong personal motivation as mildly discrediting in itself.
Thankfully that model feels increasingly foreign to the actual discursive environment presently inhabited by most Millennials and especially Zoomers.
Today’s discourse has become a lot more genealogical—which, in a loose sense, is to say more French. People increasingly ask not merely Is X true? but Who is saying X? Why does X become salient from that position? What desire does X satisfy? What identity does it protect? What relations of power allow this interpretation to become authoritative? Who gets to describe the situation? Who benefits from everybody accepting the description?
Many on the right sneer at that modality because they think they hate Foucault, but realistically the sensibility has migrated far beyond the circle of anyone who’s actually read the man—a recent graduate who’d struggle to identify Michel Foucault from a lineup will still instinctively interpret any utterance of consequence through identity, positionality, trauma, incentives, discourse, lived experience, and power.
I mean, it’s something I do myself constantly—in my hermeneutics, for instance, where all of the important principles boil down to there being no mind-independent normative firmament of social meaning, which means operatively speaking social reality is all just one colossal Hobbesian brouhaha of perpetual omnidirectional gaslighting over who was cringe and coping and a bitch and lying and so on, all of which stems from a precognitive apparatus of eugenic screening / material contest / status rivalry instrumentally alloyed in precognition to contextually fitting narratives of sincere normativity that provide crucial cognitive lubrication and interior innocence.
Now admittedly there do exist certain domains within the hard science and trades that are not functionally Foucaultian due to relying heavily on correspondence-level tracking to predict and describe the world, but in any trendline-photonegative domain e.g. corporate America or non-STEM academia it’s been perfumed Foucault for years, and any volatile Zoomer ecology doesn’t even bother with the perfume.
And none of that means that this is the world we should want to live in or accept—but it is the one we got, and any serious attempt at philosophy of anything in 2026 has got to game the entire fucking thing around a kind of operative post-structuralist totalism experienced sincerely by most normgroids as earnest aw shucks corndog realism.
Hence why I start everything at the level of hermeneutics, which demonstrate how the conative substrate’s narrative translation apparatus between conscious sincerity and subconscious instrumentality underscores so much of human social life that you need to lock down most of its discursive equilibria even before propositionally discussing e.g. epistemics makes sense—otherwise photonegative nodes can just warp the entire structure root and stem via Legibility Taxes and such without even realizing it.
Trying to engage photonegative actors or photonegative-coded institutions in earnest propositional exchange without hermeneutics of sex, status, and power is immensely counterproductive—and as photonegative actors acquire more and more power while institutions grow ever more photonegative, this will only become more the case.
But I don’t want to put too fine a point on that either, as photonegative actors are at their core a lot more confused and poorly coordinated than malevolent, and when approached under a coherent read of the world that quietly deploys Walt’s Toothpick to isolate their underlying eugenic/acquisitive/status-hungry telos from the moralistic narrativization—which is to say, by strategically gaming around her instrumental self using the hermeneutics as an esoteric interpretive grammar while engaging her earnest narrativized self with full affective sincerity—they tend as a rule to relatively tractable and very sweet.
So how do the hermeneutics ackshully get developed?
The epistemic criterion is operative effectiveness—which in Waltine Status Realist framework comes down to a concept’s ability to operationalize Walt’s Toothpick and provide an account of some archetypically canonical mode of human behavior, in which:
The precognitive instrumental incentive structure is modeled game theoretically and each actor’s tradeoff logic / price structure formulated with predictive fidelity
The separate economy of the conscious narrative apparatus is likewise modeled accurately, with a particular focus extended to local asymmetries in legibility, jurisdiction, and exit cost.
Each actor’s position is assessed from a copacetic vantage point, sketching out for all parties the factors constraining their MDC / MLC and the implications of this.
The two layers are integrated and rationalized and then ultimately gamed out toward some widely-observed archetypal equilibriation structure.
Some important notes on the hermeneutics:
They are not statements of hard ontology. Waltine Status Realism is nominalist, and thinks it a category error to assess interpretive social utterances as anything other than sincerely moralistic just-so narratives attached to a copacetic structure and precognitive instrumental interest—all of which are non-truth apt in any binary propositional sense.
Rather the hermeneutics should be seen as functionalist mythopoetic compressions that are lossy by design and intended mostly to facilitate practical behavioral modeling of photonegative actors in a way that overtly privileges the modeler’s predictive power and practical discernment.
Most of them will be sexed, breaking down human behavior as men vs. women. Obviously this is not supposed to be an absolute exhaustive binary; overlapping distributions exist. That said the Waltine grammar absolutely does treat sex as a load bearing variable, even when non-monotonically distributed along second order proximate cause level factors a la status, class, age, and locality.
The Waltine Grammer owns up to not being very empirical outside of anecdotal evidence from my own status-elastic and relatively self-selected life experiences, which is epistemically appropriate because it’s a phenomenologically-rooted system that concerns narrativization war between mutually hostile interiorities, all of whom experience themselves as earnest. It’s not about locking down causal chains definitively so much as providing a useful esoteric grammar for diachronic actors trying to make sense of unbounded late modern social ecologies without accruing resentment, cognitive load, or interpretive incoherence. The criterion of success here is usefulness to audience members of my neurotype in the short term and gradual metadiscursive penetration of wider circles over the long term.
The goal is to produce a comprehensive hermeneutic canon of late modernity that manages to wrap the whole theory around in on itself with coherence and narrative credibility, establishing canonical routes of semiotic arbitrage and metadiscursive caltrops that 1) expand the practical agency of Waltine acolytes in their dealings with photonegative actors; 2) build a vibrant intellectual subculture around this type of analysis; and 3) gradually shift equilibrium states by impacting the aggregate civilizational price structure such that epistemic foreclosure is far costlier to impose in most situations.
Let’s talk more about epistemic foreclosure.
Generally it’s what happens when precognitive status coding crashes drunk into the genetic fallacy such that genealogy is allowed to counterfeit adjudication—think the perennially aggrieved low status man who tries to voice his opinion on some crucial matter of the day but is instantly dismissed by everyone because he’s “bitter.”
Now I can’t pretend I’m especially invested in that archetype’s context-independent epistemic standing in particular—ultimately it’s pretty eugenic for society to ostracize incels to some extent, and I don’t love the idea of lazy and unaestheticized grievance being super cheap for low status men either way—but there are also lots of inelastic ecologies in photonegative corporate / media / academic ecologies where I myself often have to walk on eggshells around photonegative types to avoid foreclosure no matter how contextually high status I am elsewhere, and at scale that sort of dynamic is just atrocious for society’s long-term epistemic hygiene.
If a man believes X because he’s bitter it might interesting information about the man himself, but it is not propositional disconfirmation of X, and I don’t trust any ecology that treats it that way one iota. Sadly, as the information ecology has grown increasingly liquid over the past decade photonegative actors (not even out of malice but simple bad information economy) grown concomitantly less able to self-correct and more likely to hit disagreeable status-elastic men (or even status-elastic women) with exactly the same tactics once only applied to incels.
Not good.
One central idea we keep returning to in this analysis is Walt’s Toothpick: the idea that a belief can likewise be experienced as true internally and help satisfy instrumental material, emotional, or status interests—ultimately there just isn’t much reason to expect human cognition to ever choose between sincerity and instrumentality when usually it performs both functions at once, each to the benefit of the other.
The key distinction is between the provenance of an idea and its adjudication—which still has to happen no matter how unglamorous the provenance; indeed, the major conative north star of my own hermeneutics has always been to air the former out transparently while striving to become as ruthless as possible about the latter.
And so imagine something happens to me and it generates affect. Most of the time my immediate interpretative machinery is horrid: flattering, furious, romantic, grandiose, self-exculpatory, paranoid, or some cocktail of the five—because as any longtime Walstronaut could tell you at this point, the conative substrate has already pronounced exactly what it wants the event in question to mean long before propositional cognition could ties it shoes.
At this stage I’m producing my Maximally Dignified Copestory: the account of what happened under which I maintain as much agency, coherence, dignity per local ecological standards, and intelligibility as the present facts can possibly support.
Such an account is useful, clearly—and also quite dangerous.
And so you also throw yourself before the prosecution, asking yourself as honestly as you can muster what’s the single least flattering explanation an intelligent and hostile observer (typically I imagine an evil version of Walt’s Intern who won’t stop making anti-Walt clips on TikTok) could force you to take seriously?
What if the institution didn’t ackshully persecute me and I was kind of just acting like a chode? Am I just channeling embarrassment at my own immaturity into sterile rebellion? Have there been other occasions like this when I was better rested or more recently laid wherein I procured a more favorable outcome—and if so, is that just a discipline thing I need to work on, or does this one instance of institutional foreclosure seem especially unjust? Usually I don’t extend much narrative sympathy to spergs less socially adroit than myself—so can I really extend my own tired self any special sympathy right now?
Do I have the receipts to prove she was renarrating—and if so, could I force anyone to give a shit? Or was I fighting on terrain that forecloses me even if she’s clearly lying—which means in the history books I’M lying? And is someone who’s funneled predictably into historybook-lying kind of just Ontologically Wrong in a survival of the fittest sense?
What if the supposed principle disappears once my own special snowflake copestory is removed? Is this something men who are basically my neurotype but less impressive in various ways will instinctively identify with? If I proposed this theory to a chick I was trying to smash and still could go either way, how would it shift the probability curve? Could I get the whole thing out before a Gen X girldad’s eyes glaze over? How much Altmaning could I expect from ChatGPT if I dumped it in an anonymous chat?
Was the other guy ackshully dishonorable here—or did he just outplay me? Did his actions deleteriously impact his game-theoretic price structure in future ecologies of consequence? Does telling my side of the story ackshully impose costs, or just distract me from other possible wins and alienate allies? Did he actually “win” in any straightforward sense here, or am I just narrating an ambiguous situation in catastrophic terms because I feel entitled on some level to the universe striking down my enemies while experiencing even the slightest reticence from allies to partake in my sidequests as totalistic betrayal under the Strong Horse Effect because that’s a convenient excuse to spend all day angrily investing more heuristics whilst continually putting off the needful?
You get the picture.
The move is to game out phenomenologically (ideally with friends, because you WILL be solipsistic / delulu at times) which specific narratives will organically grow, shrink, travel, or get called cope or cringe—or even invert under photonegative conditions... just note you’re not really “lying” here as such so much as determining which truths are admissible in specific venues under particular resolutions.
Also, as my buddy Leon used to say: Don’t play Hope Chess.
Instead assume competence and rational self-interest from all actors and game out patiently and dispassionately what the strongest thing you can say is that still travels however far you need it to; usually that will produce the account, heuristic, or hermeneutic that serves as your Maximally Legible Copestory.
The project is neither to surrender automatically to whichever undignified MLC one is forced to adopt by the room nor Chris Chan your life away in a self-sealing MDC that gives you every excuse in the world to sit around sniffing your own asshole.
The project, rather, is to converge the two layers however much is possible so as to minimize distance between one’s MDC and MLC and so shrink his Copestory Delta.
The dignified interpretation is forced downward whenever it starts batting away too many counterexamples; the hostile interpretation forced upward when it survives only by parsing variables I’m precluded from even seeing. With luck the distance between what I need the event to mean and what an adversarial observer could make it mean will eventually become small enough that something relatively portable can emerge.
That’s how private pain turns into an actionable heuristic:
That woman did this to me
becomes: an actor occupying this position has an incentive to do this under these conditions.
Everyone dismissed me
becomes: low Epistemic Standing imposes a Legibility Tax.
They refused to address the claim and instead decomposed it into procedures, qualifications, burdens, and proximate confounds
becomes: Altmaning.
How do you know you’re onto something?
Quick and dirty test is to see if the principle still predicts anything when you abstract away all the proper nouns it was based on.
If so, congrats: that’s at least some portability. That said your own mind isn’t really the judge here, and the ideal way to test this is never really empirical so much as literary—specifically by asking does it resonate and travel with an audience?
I sure like to think mine does—although if I were going in blind the question would be sort of hard to adjudicate given all the concepts I’ve been weaving through my work recently, to say nothing of the density of prose.
So I guess it’s lucky I have a few thousand of you fags ready to assess me in real time.
A good heuristic will never be tainted by its genetic injury,
It will, however, compress more situations together than the genetic injury itself—and at times also yield conclusions I don’t like.
Meanwhile, if every principle proves I was secretly right, and that my enemies were envious, and each woman who rejected me was secretly overwhelmed by desire, and every institution that disliked me was terrified of my brilliance, I’ve not constructed hermeneutics so much as an immensely sophisticated fleshlight—which is why our conative origin ackshully makes epistemic discipline MORE important here; not less.
So—to recap the structure for you lords and ladies:
Affect supplies salience.
Conation proffers search direction.
Reason facilitates compression.
Epistemics constrains the answer.
Hermeneutics makes the answer portable.
Then the final layer:
Metadiscourse changes the environment in which the answer will be judged.
This matters enormously because propositions do not enter discourse into a vacuuml some speakers receive enormous interpretive charity, while others pay a Legibility Tax before their sentence has even been parsed, and certain other categories of claim can be disposed of through predictable procedural maneuvers.
An interlocutor can inflate evidentiary burdens, contaminate speakers categorically, literalize an obviously probabilistic claim, endlessly subdivide causal mechanisms, substitute motive analysis for object-level adjudication, or otherwise raise the cost of asserting something without technically disproving it—after which generating further evidence is basically akin to repeatedly dropping quarters in a slot machine whose owner controls the payout table.
And so Metadiscursive Caltrops attempt instead to alter the local price structure.
First we identify the cheap canonical maneuver.
Then we describe it accurately enough that an audience will recognize it when deployed.
Then finally we leave the tactic available (elsewise it registers to photonegative and institutional actors as self-sealing even with a falsification condition, which under a normie’s discursive insight will always reduce your standing) but remove its invisibility while imposing metadiscursive costs through semiotic arbitrage that ultimately will lead your interlocutor back onto terrain you choose.
But anywho, speaking of caltrops—did you know this essay actually contains one>
Perhaps you’re starting to get a sense now for what specificlaly I mean when I say I’d like to cultivate an intellectual ecology.
The goal isn’t a big pile of concepts that let me retrospectively explain why bad things happened; that would just be the Walt Bismarck Principle eating its own tail, each successive explanatory victory yet another cannibalization of object-level agency.
Rather, the higher-order object of my project as presently constituted is quite simply to make certain forms of foreclosure less discursively cheap.
If enough of my hermeneutics become portable—Epistemic Foreclosure, Interpretive Jurisdiction, the Counterfactual Swap Test, Altmaning, the Metadiscursive Caltrop—then actors encountering some claim will have slightly more available language for noticing what precisely is happening around the claim.
Nobody even has to agree with me for it to work; just become slightly harder for photonegative actors to railroad unconsciously. Even a small increase in transaction costs would impose a material strain on the headpat economy and so precipitate meaningful equilibriation in a direction I’d like.
Nothing too crazy is required to that end—just a few memorable caltrops bouncing around the terrain and slowly increasing the cost of foreclosure.
Hell, for our purposes said caltrops needn’t even involve any of those baroque coalitional ploys I described in Discursive Game Theory; it would produce a wholly satisfactory equilibriation if they could simply make such criticism specific.
That’s why I want my hermeneutics floating around as memes in negative space.
I’d really prefer to live in a world where “you’re motivated,” “you’re bitter,” “people like you always say that,” or “everyone knows that” aren’t able to terminate literally all resistance entirely by themselves anymore, instead forcing interlocutors downward toward explicit premises, falsifiable causal models, overt counterfactuals, testable predictions, and remembered behavior.
Yes—that obviously is a motivated preference.
Clearly I’d benefit hugely from such an ecology.
I also think it would be better—and there’s your fucking Toothpick.
Because it turns out even that belief is cover for something quite a lot more primitive still: namely that I really, really—REALLY—fucking hate being epistemically foreclosed.
I hate feeling jurisdictionally precluded from formalizing some asymmetric sexed phenomenon I keep observing into a crisp mythic compression that travels.
I hate constantly being told I’m coping about shit by status-inelastic muggles with zero metacognition who somatically experience acute disgust / threat signals whenever I have the gall to inhabit my neurotype unapologetically.
I hated having to eat that motherfucking whisper campaign.
I really fucking hated being DARVO’d by someone I’d stepped on a nail to protect.
The autobiographical experiences that populated my hermeneutics were not analytically rigorous propositions—but nor were they noise. They were archetypally patterned equilibrium responses to circumstances in frictionless late modern digital oral culture ecologies that operate under a new set of rules I’ve spent the better part of a year formulating in sharper relief than anyone else alive… because I was motivated.
Perhaps the right term for it is conative pressure stack: first there’s precognition; then consciously experienced affect; then cope and renarration; then any overt strategy and compressed or propositionalized philosophical machinery; and then at the tippity-top it’s all about metadiscursive heuristics adjudication and hermeneutics propagation.
And so the production chain undergirding the Waltine Formulation looks something like: affect → conation → copestory → hostile adjudication → compression → portable heuristic → prediction → metadiscursive intervention → altered ecology.
Reason is the slave of the passions. Always has been and always will be.
If Bentham’s Bulldog or w/e wants to try and emancipate the bitch he can be my guest, but I myself am quite content to keep her in the cotton field.
But you can’t just have her holes whenever. There are standards.
And there are likewise lots of ways even today that sufficiently motivated actors can put a real dent in long-term discursive equilibria. It’s hard to gauge results at times since your own specific role in the chain won’t always be legible—tbh it almost never is at all dealing photonegative actors, who are never really defeated as such so much as vaguely corralled or absorbed—but I’ve literally done this myself fairly extensively for years now within the wider Chudstack ecology, and anyone who watches my podcast can judge the results for themselves.
Anyway I’ll release more praxisshit in the immediate future, but for now I encourage anyone on board with this to familiarize urself with my Waltine Hermeneutics and Discursive Game Theory, as well as this morning’s vivisection of normie psychology.
Let me know also if you can think of a coo and high-leverage topic it might be worth it for me to cover in depth—I’m open to pretty much any suggestion.
And with that, sweet droogs, I’ll bid you adieu.
