I think you're onto something with the point about slightly different pheromones. I've noticed how chicks who are a White/ Hispanic mix have pheromones that get me going most, while Asian chicks might as well not have them, and white chicks have pheromones that are more just kind of soothing. Something I wouldn't have consciously thought of if you didn't make this point.
Interestingly, Jewish guys are notorious for falling for Asian women, so maybe it's one of those 'certain distance away' things.
I think the pheromones do make sense though--they say women will find the smell of men with different MHC complexes more attractive (apparently it makes the immune system more diverse and helps with disease resistance). And of course an exotic mate is a good way to avoid recessive genes for disease--you'll both be carrying them, but not the same ones.
