Trust can also be understood through long-term self-interest.

A stable relationship is itself a channel for resources. It continuously provides information, opportunities, cooperation, help, and access to resources, and as the relationship becomes more stable, many of these flow preferentially within it.

Someone can certainly lie, betray, or break a promise for an immediate gain. That may produce a larger payoff today, but it can also break the relationship. What disappears is not just one person, but the future information, opportunities, resources, and cooperation that the relationship could have continued to provide.

Short-term and long-term self-interest do not always align. Taking one immediate gain can mean selling the channel through which future gains would have continued to arrive.

From this perspective, trust does not require selflessness. Maintaining trust over time can itself be the Self-Interest Principle operating across a long-term relationship.
